Google announced a grant for the Indian Capital Technology Center in Tahlequah to fund the purchase of science and IT equipment.

The support from this grant will serve students from eight different high schools in Adair and Cherokee counties.

Google, whose data center is located in Mayes County, funded a $40,000 grant to enable ICTC's Bill Willis campus to continue to prepare highly-qualified IT professionals for the northeast Oklahoma workforce.

The grant, part of Google's STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program, was issued through the Google Inc. Charitable Giving Fund of the Tides Foundation and will be used to purchase technology equipment for the Enterprise Network Professional and Oklahoma School of Science and Math programs at ICTC.

"It is our goal to prepare IT professionals and help create a successful, skilled workforce in northeastern Oklahoma," Buzzy Manning, Enterprise Network Professional instructor at ICTC, said. "The tech industry is growing here as is evident by Google's expanding presence in Mayes County. We greatly appreciate Google's willingness to invest in technical education in our community."

ICTC provides IT training serving both youth and adults. The program allows students to receive hands-on instruction. With the grant funds from Google, ICTC will be able to purchase tablets used for digital instructional and study material for each student. In addition, the funds will provide networking equipment including kits and materials for students to practice fiber termination.

"We felt this grant was important to fund because the impact on the community is very high," Mike Wooten, operations manager for the Google Oklahoma data center, said. "The need is great for highly-skilled technical workers in our community. By granting these funds, we're investing in the future of the tech industry in Oklahoma."
