Police departments across Green Country told FOX23 crooks are stealing fuel from Kum & Go stores and it could be affecting your wallet.
A prepay option is still available at the gas pump but what you may have noticed is there used to be a pay inside button available.
It has now been blacked out and for a reason.
It's because customers at Kum & Go now don't have the option to pump their gas and then pay inside.
Everything has to be prepaid.
When we asked customers how they filled up, we heard, "Every time I do get gas, I do prepay."
Most had the same answer.
They pay before they pump.
"A gas station that doesn't prepay people would come in all the time and just steal gas," said Wayne Apple.
Sand Springs Assistant Chief of Police Mike Carter says that's been a problem for years.
At least at local Kum & Go stores.
"The criminals would know where to target gas thefts on who was not taking those proactive steps," said Carter.
Until recently, customers had the option to pay after pumping their gas at Kum & Go stores.
Carter crunched the numbers and found 17 calls alone at this Kum & Go store and that's just in the month of December.
This is something Carter says took his officers off the streets and often put his men in danger.
"We've even had high-speed chases," said Carter.
But Jan. 7, Carter says that all changed.
Kum & Go corporate told FOX23 the change wasn't about gas theft but customer experience.
In an email they said, "When our associates are able to give their full attention to customers in the store, without having to track fuel purchases at the pumps, we can offer faster, better service."
Whatever the reason may be,Carter is happy with the change.
FOX23 asked, "So in the last week and a half you have not made any calls to that Kum & Go?"
"No," Carter replied.
Now his officers can fully devote themselves to bigger problems.
Kum & Go corporate told FOX23 this change has taken effect in all stores across Oklahoma but that it's not company wide.
They say it's just a trial system.
If they don't like it they may go back to the old way.
