Gas prices fall below three dollars Sunday and it’s just in time for the Fourth of July holiday.

Locally prices at the pump are at 2.99; that’s below the national average of 3.50, which a year ago was just 3.37.

But drivers tell FOX23’s Janai Norman they’re cashing in now expecting these prices to spike again soon enough.

“It takes almost 100 dollars to fill up my truck,” Matt Davis estimates.

With the drop in prices, Ashley Omen says, “I probably saved about 5 or 6 dollars.”

Gas woes are a problem we all know too well.

We caught with Davis as he filled up one his family’s two cars. He says he thought the 2.99/gal price tag was a mistake, and even when he realized it wasn’t, Davis says he was leery.

“I was kind of excited but I’m kind of scared because every time it drops, it jumps outrageously.”

Omen filled up for just fewer than 40 bucks and says she’ll use what few dollars she saved today soon enough when prices are back up.

“Oh I figured it’ll only last a few days before it goes up higher, like it did last time,” Omen said.

Davis adds, “It’s very difficult when you have to budget in 4-800 dollars enough in fuel alone.”

But for at least Monday at the pumps, drivers are singing a slightly better tune.

“Its amazing, I have more money,” Douglas Hansche said.

Hansche has only been driving about 2 years and says these prices are unfamiliar.

Norman asked, “When is the last time you paid that much for gas?”

Hansche said, “Not since I’ve been driving.”

In case you don’t remember, according to GasBuddy.com prices fell below three bucks back in December and January of this year, and before that, around Christmas of 2011.
