Claremore police chased five men after they say Walmart employees caught them stealing merchandise on surveillance cameras.
Police followed them closely for several miles from Walmart, north on Route 66, to a Claremore neighborhood. They hit a dead end.
“It became a little chaotic because we assumed the suspects would be in one of the backyards,” said Claremore’s Assistant Police Chief Charles Downum. “They didn’t think the suspects continued to drive through four backyards and through a trailer park.”
They did drive through though and damaged fences, and lawn equipment, and landscaping.
“I was amazed this happened this morning,” said Joanna Guadagno. “My fence was damaged, my swing set was damaged, and my garden.”
Police lost the alleged thieves for 12 minutes but caught up with them again on the highway and then they dead ended again near Sequoyah schools, about seven miles from where they started at Walmart.
Police records later showed all five men are from Springfield Missouri.
“That is maybe why they kept getting lost,” said Asst. Chief Downum.
The men are: Jordon Oswalt, Logan Zachari Lehnig, Tyler Sowder, Cooper Hawkins and David Allread.
All were charged with grand larceny and obstructing an officer. Other charges included possession of a controlled substance, eluding an officer, and running a roadblock. All five were booked into Rogers County jail.
