Tulsa Police and city officials have been warning families about fireworks in the city. It’s illegal and it’s a costly fine.

FOX23 News went on a ride-a-long to see how people are ignoring the law and tying up 911 when they could be working on real emergencies.

Right before dusk and the pops of fireworks can be heard in Tulsa neighborhoods.

“How are you all doing tonight?” asked Sergeant Mark Wollmershauser.

The officer spotted a child holding a Roman Candle.

“We know we can’t be shooting fireworks in the city of Tulsa?” said Wollmershauser.

He knows it’s not the child’s fault that’s why Wollmershauser talked to the parents.

“I thought this was Turley,” said an adult. “No, this is the City of Tulsa,” said Wollmershauser.

Turley is across the street.

“There was a big fight with Roman candles and we don’t want that kind of trouble again,” said Wollmershauser.

Fortunately, no one was injured but it broke a window.

However, after the story those same parents didn’t understand the danger.

“It’s illegal sir. Technically it’s illegal,” said Wollmershauser.

The ticket can be costly. In Tulsa, fireworks violations can cost $500.

“I am just letting you know because I could have given you a ticket I would rather give you a heads up that it’s illegal,” said Wollmershauser to the parent.

Another little girl in another neighborhood is seen with a sparkler in the street.

Her father didn’t mind at all getting a heads up.

“Just letting you know there is a city ordinance against shooting fireworks off,  even possessing fireworks,” said Wollmershauser.

Not only can fireworks hurt kids but there is a fire danger.

“The big reason we can’t do it in the neighborhood is because it could easily catch fire,” said Wollmershauser to a parent.

That’s why officers also made sure cars stayed off the grass in parks and driveways.

“It’s to save the neighborhood,” said Wollmershauser.

He pointed to dried grass that had been charred either by a car or possibly a firework.

Tulsa police officers said this type of patrolling is to make sure everyone has a safe Independence Day.

“I appreciate your cooperation,” said Wollmershauser. “Oh, no problem. Have a blessed day,” said a father.

Officers said as fireworks calls increase, it may take them longer to respond. They’ll need to respond to priority one calls such as shootings and domestics before firework calls.

to disgruntled...i guess you missed the sarcasm. i find it totally ridiculous to charge for the permit...if they relly wanted to know who was doing the shooting make them free. we all know times are hard so what would you do if it was you..pay a 50 dollar fee that cuts your budget probably in half or say screw it and get more for your family? this was just a way for the cities to cash in on the firework holiday nothing more.

Never mind Mr.Disgruntled ,I ,after seeing the attack on police with fireworks in N.Tulsa shamefully take back my remarks and plead for forgiveness.I am most disturbed by this. The poor police looked lost, hands tied.I have never seen Tulsa in as bad shape as it is in now.Crime totally out of control for fear of offending someone. The touchy, feely approach isn't working. Our politicians are only conccerned about their little part of town, downtown, and the river parks while the rest of town goes to the boogieman.Maybe we need outside help.

Yes catalytic converters are required by law.You pull to the side of the road to check a tire, you take off having started a fire,a patrolman sees this and holds you responsible, laws should be upheld...

Yes aleman, I realize catalytic converters cause many huge grass fires every year. I realize that cars and trucks backfiring or even blowing a tire badly can cause fires. However, it comes back to the same thing. No, I am not going to stop driving my car. My car is LEGAL, and the catalytic converter is required by law. I may accidentally start a fire but I do it in a legal way. FIREWORKS ARE ILLEGAL AND THOSE LAWS SHOULD BE UPHELD. I would also like to comment on someone's statement that you can shoot fireworks in Bartlesville/Dewey if you pay a $50.00 permit fee. Some communities do this and the police have the names and addresses of those with the fireworks so that if something bad happens they know which people had them in the city limits. All I'm trying to say is that bad things happen all the time, but we don't need to be breaking the law to possibly make them happen. And, we especially DONT need our children to see us break the law. What are we teaching them; that it is all right to break the law if you dont agree with it or want to ignore? I have nothing against fireworks for evening shows; I think they're beautiful. But if you all want to have them in your yard, start a petition and get the law changed so that you can, And yes they've passed laws making something I like to do illegal a couple of times. Not all laws are agreeable to all people, but all laws should be upheld unless they are changed.

Disgruntled, you admonish others to take responsibility for their own actions while at the same time you commend the government's acting "for the protection of everyone." You can't have it both ways.

Disgruntled: Those are ALL fallacious arguments. YOU need to think of the consequences of YOUR actions before you acquiesce to the government micromanaging your freedoms.
