Tulsa Police confirm two suspicious devices found near 61st and 71st and Mingo are commercial fireworks.
TPD blocked off traffic on Mingo between 61st and 71st for about two hours after a woman called police, saying she thought she saw a hand grenade in the 71st & Mingo intersection. When officers arrived on scene they found a second device located on 61st street.
“We do appreciate the woman who called it in,” said TPD Captain, Dave Roberts.
Following an investigation the Tulsa Police Bomb Squad determined the devices are commercial fireworks designed to look like grenades.
“It could have just as easily been the real thing, it did look real,” said Sgt. Jacob Thompson with the Tulsa Police Bomb Squad.
Sgt. Thompson says that investigation is ongoing.
“People that set off hoax devices like this in the middle of intersections in the city of Tulsa, we do prosecute those,” said Sgt. Thompson.
Sgt. Thompson reiterated that the concerned citizen did the right thing in notifying the police. “The officers did the right thing; the concerned citizen did the right thing.
Once TPD determined the areas were not a risk the intersections were reopened.
TPD tells FOX23 the next step will be to try to find surveillance video, to figure out how the fireworks got there.
