A brand new crop of firefighters just signed on in Tulsa.
On Sunday, they saw how much they mean to the community.
At Veterans Park, the Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service honored all the firefighters who died in the last year.
A bell was sounded for 11 firefighters during the ceremony. The bell signified the final alarm for the firefighters who died last year.
"It has a lot of meaning to me because I was on the fire department too," said Lonnie Lamb.
Lamb gave 30 years of his life to the fire department. His father, Gerald Lamb, did too. He passed away on Fathers Day last year.
"He really enjoyed the job; he enjoyed the members," said Lamb.
Fire Chief Ray Driskell said firefighters spend about a third of their lives away from family.
"There really is no greater bond than at the fire department, and we let that exhibit," said Driskell.
The newest firefighters have only been on the job for a week, but already, they're seeing their new responsibility requires a special kind of dedication.
"It’s a different job," said Lamb.
This is the 16th year for the memorial service.
