Oklahoma's open carry law goes into effect in six weeks on November 1.
Firearms classes all over the area are filling up. If you're interested, you need to know it takes a few weeks to secure the proper license.
Matthew Burton has been extremely busy lately.
Burton said his phone has been ringing non-stop. He said concerned citizens are asking him when they can enroll in his firearms training class.
Enrollment has more than doubled, since Governor Fallin signed the open carry bill into law four months ago.
"What they're trying to protect themselves with any legal means they can," said Burton.
Come November 1, licensed gun owners won't have to conceal their heat.
Burton teaches firearms classes at Liberty Defense Solutions, in Bixby. He said classes have been filled with mostly women.
Right now, Rachel Brewer carries her 22 in her purse.
"Many of my friends have their concealed carry,” said Brewer. “I'm probably one of the last to do it."
Brewer said she’ll have her open-carry license soon. The new law and a bloody scene at a Colorado movie theatre convinced her she's made the right decision.
"I believe in my right to bare arms and will do so in a legal manner," said Brewer.
There are places the gun can not go: the courthouse, corrections facilities and any public place that prohibits firearms. You'll also have to pass a background check in order to get a license.
Oklahoma will become the 25th state with an open carry law. If you plan to carry openly your gun must remain in a holster that is either fully or partially visible. The gun cannot be any longer than 16 inches.
You’ll also need to carry a valid Oklahoma ID and a handgun license at all times.
