Fire at north Tulsa landfill put out

Tulsa firefighters say a landfill fire in north Tulsa is now out.

The fire was mostly tires buried deep in the landfill and continue to melt together, so it's a tedious process to put of the flames. Firefighters are using water and foam.

Also, crews from the Quarry Landfill are helping bulldoze and move materials out of the way for firefighters. Smoke is in the area near the site. Hazmat crews have been called in to help control it. 

Fire officials tell us lightning sparked the original fire in a pile of tar chips that was 40 feet high, 200 feet long and 100 feet wide. They ran into some difficulty because the nearest hydrant was about a quarter of a mile away.

Officials say there are no environmental or health risks.
