Fresh produce is now on sale in west Tulsa.

The Westside Farmer's Market officially opened on Thursday at the northwest corner of West 25th and Southwest Boulevard.

FOX23’s Ian silver went to the ribbon cutting and found there are high hopes for the market.

Southwest Tulsa has long been considered a food desert, with few options for groceries, and certainly fresh produce, until now.

"We've already got people lined up here sitting in their cars waiting to buy fresh produce and have that opportunity. So, we're really excited,” said City Councilor Jeannie Cue.

And after a ribbon cutting ceremony, "got some of my favorites: green beans, onions and some lettuce,” said Richard Ryan, a shopper waiting in line.

Ryan grew up in west Tulsa and has been hoping for something for years that would help grow the community's economy.

The farmers market, he says, is the first of many steps.

"More retail and a grocery store, of course. And then I think the traffic would come,” said Ryan.

“We just hope more people bring their fresh produce out to sell, because I think they'll be surprised what a great business they'll have," said Cue.

But this market is also about giving people here healthier food options, something they've long been lacking.

"We have, you know the Eugene Field area that's just about a block from here, which we hope to be able to accommodate also with some of these healthier products," said Executive Director of Redfork Main Street Dianne Billeck.

The Westside farmers market will be running every Thursday from two until seven pm. It will also feature produce grown by students at Eugene Fields Elementary and Webster High School.
