An affidavit for an arrest warrant reveals new details in the death of Deborah Connor and the kidnapping of her 6-year old grandson, allegedly by her son, Robert Conner III, the boy's father.
According to an Osage County deputy, they were called by Connor's neighbor around 8 p.m. Tuesday. The woman told deputies her friend, Connor, had been shot at the trailer park where they both lived.
The woman told deputies Connor's 10-year old grandson ran to her house and told her Connor had been shot. The woman and the little boy locked themselves in the bathroom of her home and called for help.
Deputies arrived at the home about 30 minutes later and found Deborah Connor's body in front of her home. The deputies went to the neighbor's home and found the woman and 10-year old.
According to the affidavit the 10-year old told deputies his father got to his grandmother's house around 7:30 and they were fighting. The boy said his grandmother told him and his 6-year old brother to stay inside while she was outside with his father.
According to the report, the boy said he looked out a window when he heard yelling and told deputies he saw his father shoot his grandmother. He said that's when he ran next door.
Deputies said he told them he looked outside later and saw his little brother standing in the yard crying. Deputies determined the father took the 6-year-old when he left.
An amber alert was issued and Connor was arrested on Wednesday in Texas. The 6-year old is now withfamily. Robert Connor III is charged with first-degree murder.
Connor's brother-in-law, Tim Connor, said her grandchildren meant the world to her.
"They were her life and that's one reason why she moved back from Texas. To be with them," he said.
The family said they don't blame Robert Connor III for what happened.
"You can't make someone take medicine and he had no one there to make him take it like a wife or something like that," said Tim.On Thursday, the family released this statement:
"Our family is deeply saddened by this tragedy. We wanted to thank the media, law enforcement, and many other people involved for your support during the recent chain of events.
As you begin to piece together what's happened, you are probably asking yourself "Who is Robert Leroy Connor III"? We call him Trey. He is our brother, our nephew, our cousin, our grandson, loved by his family.
The Trey we know is a very intelligent young man. He loves his family. Trey and his brother and sister also lost their father in August of last year, and have been dealing with that loss for over a year now.
Sadly, Trey has also been dealing with a mental illness for 10 years, Schizoaffective Disorder. It’s believed that one in four Americans are dealing with one mental disorder or another. Stigmas associated with mental illness should be removed and replaced by healthy discussion and treatment.
The family recently filed a petition for a mental health hearing and believed that we could protect his two boys by getting temporary custody. Like many of you, we're also trying to put the pieces together. Please respect our privacy, as we begin to process the reality of what has taken place."
Paulette Pidcock, Debi Connor's cousin and best friend is comforting Debi's family, and expressing love for Robert.
"I love him, really. I love him a lot," she said.
A fund for the family has been set up at the Sand Springs Community Federal Credit Union, it is called the Deborah Connor Memorial Fund.
