Nearly a month after their daughter was shot to death in east Tulsa, the family of Kayla Ferrante is asking the public for help.
Her parents are seeking donations for a Crime Stoppers reward to help find Kayla’s killer. She died more than three weeks ago when a bullet went through the license plate of the car she was in and hit her in the back.
Now, her father, Paul, wears a silver cross necklace around his neck that holds the ashes of his daughter.
"She's right here right now. I've got some of her ashes with me all the time in this and that way she's with me at all times. Morning, noon and night I will always have a piece of her with me,” says Paul.
He says he would rather have his daughter standing by his side, but just knowing she’s close to his heart brings him a small amount of comfort.
"It's tough. She was my world. I had her every other weekend,” he says.
Kayla was shot and killed one day after she graduated from Memorial High School. The bullet from a high-powered rifle went through the license plate of a car and hit Kayla in the passenger seat. Her death has left a family shattered and a police department searching for her killer.
"We need to know what happened and why this happened, and we need somebody to come forward. That information is out there,” says Kayla’s mom, Roxanne Thornton.
The family is hoping a reward through Crime Stoppers will bring in the right tips to solve her murder.
"All of the funds that are donated in Kayla's name will be earmarked for tips on her specific crime,” says Thornton.
"We're hoping that the dollar amount can shake the bushes and get some tips to the police,” says Crime Stoppers Executive Director Carol Bush.
Tulsa Police have been following several leads but so far, nothing has panned out.
If an arrest happens without the use of a Crime Stoppers tip, the money donated will be given to the special needs program at Memorial High School.
