The Oklahoma ABLE commission is ramping up efforts to reduce underage drinking during prom and spring break season.
A family in Grove tells FOX23 they are supporting the commissions’ effort in honor of their teenage son.
Donna Kern never got to see her son, Colton, in his prom tuxedo until she buried him.
“I never got to see him to tell him how proud I was of him and how great he looked,” said Donna, “but I saw him at the service with his prom clothes on.”
Donna and Duane’s 17-year-old son, Colton, died the night before prom in an alcohol related car accident.
The Kerns’ tell FOX23 that Colton purchased alcohol from a liquor store without an I.D. On April 20th he drank the alcohol while setting up prom decorations with friends at schools. They say that when administrators found out about the incident Colton was told to leave school premises.
Duane says Colton left with two of his friends but he eventually got behind the wheel. Duane says his son rolled his truck after taking a sharp turn. Colton’s blood alcohol was two times the legal limit.
The Oklahoma ABLE commission is ramping up efforts to cut down on underage drinking. Agent Eric Smoot with the ABLE commission tells FOX23 officers will begin extra enforcement on Friday through next week.
“The enforcement efforts will include fake ID enforcement, party patrol, enforcing social host laws and training more police officers on how to conduct these types of investigations,” said Smoot.
Colton’s’ parents say they fully support the ABLE commissions efforts.
“We hope that we will somehow keep this from happening to someone else,” said Duane.
