Dueling December parades in Tulsa again for 2012

The Tulsa Christmas Parade was initially going to be held at Tulsa Hills Shopping Center on December 15th, but Tulsa Hills management thought that would create too much traffic on a very important shopping day.

Organizers decided to bump the parade up a week; once again pitting it against the Tulsa Holiday Parade of Lights.

Eddie Huff, organizer of the Tulsa Christmas Parade, isn’t apologizing.

“I think Tulsa's big enough for two parades. We don't see a controversy. Theirs is a holiday parade, and ours is a Christmas parade. They're two different parades,” Huff, a board member for the Christmas Parade, told FOX23 Monday.

Larry Fox, who has helped put together the Holiday Parade of Lights for 25 years, isn’t happy about the last minute change that pits the two parades against each other for the second year in a row.

“Our parade is on the second Saturday of December, and it has been for the at least the 25 years that I have been involved,” Fox said.

Fox thinks the schedule change will put a damper on both events.

“I am sure it hurts both events. People like parades, and I am sure there’s a lot who’d like to go to both of them.”

Huff isn’t buying that.

“It was a conflict last year, and we still had 10-20,000 people show up.”

Tulsans say if they’re on the same day, so be it. Even if they do wish everyone could get along and have just one parade.

“Well it'd be nice, but where there's people you're never going to get everyone to agree, so I think it's fine to have two parades,” Jerri Messner said.

For those undecided about which parade to brave, it probably won’t be a name that twists their hand when they choose which parade to attend.

“I guess the other thing that's going to come up is which is closer to where you are, location may play a big factor for a lot of people,” Eileen Halbrook said.

Tulsa Christmas Parade Organizers are also trying to alleviate some traffic problems that hampered last year’s event.

They say they will offer shuttles from ORU’s Mabee Center and cut down on the number of parade participants this year. The organizers of the also say they’ll work hard to make sure their event is not on the same night as the Holiday Parade of Lights next year.
