The unceasing bark of her pit bull is the only reason Tina McDaris noticed smoke coming out of her neighbor's home late Thursday morning.
"She was just insistent at that gate that something, something was terribly wrong," McDaris said. "That’s when I went to the side and saw the smoke."
McDaris said she's lived in her home for ten years and knows the elderly man living next door to her very well. When she saw the smoke she said she immediately called her neighbor to see if he was alright and then she dialed 911.
"I’m sure the alarm company eventually got the notice," said fire captain Robby Roberson. "But I think it was the neighbor that called it in to begin with."
"He’s family, I mean not blood family but he’s family," McDaris said about her neighbor.
"If it wasn’t for my dog going crazy at the fence barking I don’t think my mom
would’ve noticed that there’s a fire next door," her daughter, Misti McDaris, said. "Xena [the dog] to me, I think she's one of kind."
