According to a new study published in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association advanced breast cancer cases have increased slightly among young women. It's still uncommon in women younger than 40, and experts are uncertain about the reasons for the increase.

The results are in an analysis of 34 years of U.S. cancer data.

Dr. Regina Lewis at OSU Women’s Health Center says that the study isn’t cause for young women to panic. She says that more research needs to be conducted and that issue is addressed in the study.

“At this point it’s not time to start changing screening ages for women less than 40 years of age,” said Dr. Lewis.
Dr. Lewis says that the study is a good reminder for women of all ages to do self-administered breast exams on a monthly basis.

“If you know what is normal with your body than you will recognize what is abnormal,” said Dr. Lewis.
Dr. Lewis tells FOX23 that if you notice an abnormality in your breast that you should contact your physician and schedule a visit.

“If you notice a lump that is firm or that doesn’t move or is non-tender then you need to call,” said Dr. Lewis.

Michelle Dawes of Broken Arrow was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 34. She performed regular at home exams and caught the lump under her arms.

“I was only 34 I wasn’t even supposed to do a mammogram for another six year,” said Michelle, “Come to find out it was stage 3-c breast cancer.”

Michelle underwent a double mastectomy and says she encourages all women to become familiar with their bodies and be proactive and do monthly self-exams.

“Don’t wait for that one visit when you see your gynecologist and leave it up to them because it’s a whole year that has gone by,” said Michelle.
