Three Rogers County teenagers egged their neighbor’s mobile home and threw milk at it only to get caught and forced to clean it up.
Deputies caught the teenagers and went to their mother to suggest a punishment. They asked if she would allow the boys to clean up their mess and clean the rest of the outside of the home.
She agreed.
“I think it’s the way it ought to be,” said Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton. “Instead of taking the kids through the juvenile court system for vandalism we made them clean it up. It taught them a valuable lesson and it saved their mother from taking her time off work to come to court with them.”
The sheriff’s office posted the story to its Facebook page and it went viral. In three days it had more than 75,000 views and thousands of shares.
“I think what drives more than 75,000 views is people like our transparency and like to see the lighter side of our job,” said Sheriff Walton.
Sheriff Walton admits his way of punishing the boys would not fly in every community. “Sometimes we aren’t by the book but I believe the community supports us and it shows on our Facebook page!”
The sheriff’s office has posted other crimes on its Facebook.
In February, they posted “And the award for the dumbest criminal goes to… Joseph Barbee.”
Barbee was arrested for leaving his footprints in the snow after burglarizing his neighbors’ homes.
He confessed when they caught him with his tracks in the snow leading from his home to his neighbor’s home and back to his home.
