Coweta H.S. senior's cancer returns a fourth time

When FOX23 News went “On The Road” to Coweta earlier this year, reporter Adam Paluka introduced us to Morgan Mitchell.
At the time, Mitchell was a three time cancer survivor looking forward to a cancer free senior year at Coweta High School. Mitchell had even won the coveted role of portraying the tiger mascot at home athletic events.
Last week, Morgan got the devastating news her cancer had returned for a fourth time. Morgan Mitchell’s best friend Baylie Diffee had their senior year all planned out. “(We would go to) games, pep assemblies. We always talked about taking a senior road trip,” she told FOX23. Sometimes life does not follow the script you write. “I was finally excited because it's my senior year, I won't have to go through everything, and I'll be here everyday to see my friends everyday,” Mitchell said. God had a different plan. Last week, 18-year-old Mitchell learned her cancer had returned for a fourth time with a vengeance with cancer spots on both her lungs and a kidney. “No one should have to go through this. No one should have to hear that you have it four times, and definitely not a kid,” Morgan said. Mitchell's thoughts turned to a senior year much different than she imagined. “I thought, ‘Man, I won't be the tiger now.’” She had planned to be the mascot at home sporting events, and she'd planned to be with her best friends. “She's fought so hard, and she's so positive and she's so great to everyone, I just don't understand why it has to happen to her,” Diffee said. Mitchell has taken the news with her trademark grace and determination. “Morgan is not the kid with cancer; Morgan is the girl who fights cancer everyday,” Morgan’s teacher Kristi Stack said. “I just wish this disease was never here, but that wouldn't be life,” Mitchell said. Morgan's usually the shoulder her friends cry on, but her tears during her interview with FOX23’s Adam Paluka were a break from her routine. “She taught me to never give up, she's always there for me, even though what she goes through is way worse than what I go through,” Diffee said. She's certain in the coming months there will be 12 more rounds of chemo, maybe surgery, and other innovative treatments. This time, her friends are making sure she knows they’re with her every step of the way. “My phone has just been blowing up, but in a good way. It’s just been outstanding, Mitchell told FOX23. They're tweeting messages of hope and prayers. They’ve started a Facebook page to show support, and they are even trying to get #prayforMorgan trending on Twitter. “There's a lot of people that don't even know her, and they'll tweet it, and it makes a big difference too. Other schools, students from towns that aren't even Coweta related,” Cacy Harmon, a senior at Coweta High School, told FOX23. “I can't express my feelings to show them how much it means to me and my family, it just would never happen.” Mitchell knows when doctors have their doubts she has a faith that's often tested but never questioned. “God healed back then, and he can heal now, and I know he's going to give me a miracle, and I know that's what he's going to do.” To visit the Facebook page supporting Morgan, click here: https://www.facebook.com/MorgansFightMyFight A fund has been set up for Morgan and her family to help cover the cost of cancer treatment expenses at First National Bank of Coweta.
