After two days of searching, rescue crews recovered the body of a Claremore teen who disappeared Sunday.

Keith Chambers, 15, was a sophomore at Claremore High School. Police believe he fell through the ice at a retention pond near his home.

After two days of watching, waiting and hoping, residents on West Chambers Avenue in Claremore heard the news.

"It's heartbreaking, absolutely heartbreaking," said Gale Pease, a neighbor.

Around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, searchers with the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office found the body of Chambers.

Chambers had been missing since Sunday. Authorities started searching the pond, less than half a mile away from his home, because they found footprints near it and a glove in a hole in the ice.

Claremore police believe Chambers fell through. FOX23 learned the ice was likely only one or two inches thick.

"If you're in Michigan or Minnesota, it's a different story, but if you're in Oklahoma, the temperatures do not get cold enough to support, typically, being out on a pond, creek or a lake," said Charles Downum, the Claremore assistant police chief.

The freezing temperatures forced rescuers to delay their search of the pond on Monday.

"The dive team had some issues with equipment failure with regulators not working properly, so that hindered our search," said Downum.

Tuesday morning, a boat was able to drag the bottom of the pond instead and divers went in to recover the body.

Police don't know why Chambers was at the pond. But neighbors tell FOX23 it's a spot where kids like to play and hang out.

His classmates say going back to school to see Chambers' seat empty will be difficult.

"Everyone seems to be upset about it. Everyone is just surprised that someone who has always been there won't be there anymore," said Krislyn Pease, a classmate.
