A grandmother contacted Fox 23 with claims that her granddaughter has been the victim of ongoing racism.

The 13-year old is a 7th grade student at Charles Haskell Middle School in Broken Arrow.

According to Willa Morrison, two weeks ago, several students called her granddaughter the "n" word.

Broken Arrow Spokesperson Keith Isbell said Haskell's principal did reprimand the students who had harassed the girl and though it the issue was resolved.

However, the girl told her family that recently, during physical education class, some students intentionally hit her in the face with a ball, during a dodge ball game.
The family stressed that the rule of the game is to attack your opponent with a ball, below the waist.

Morrison said the verbal abuse obviously escalated into a physical attack.

The family contacted the school, but did not receive any positive response.

"If nobody is going to tell them stop that, this is wrong, then who's to say the next little Black girl won't suffer something," Morrison said. "She's afraid, she doesn't feel safe there at the school."

Isbell said the school's administrators are willing to sit down with the family to resolve the issue.

According to the district's policy, any student found guilty of racial insensitivity will be assigned to S.A.C. (Student Alternative Classroom), isolated from other students or possibly suspension.

ekiookie, I did not dredge up the Black and White issue. The title of this story was "racism in broken arrow schools." Have you read the school audit which in on the internet regarding the ex superintendant Mr. Sisney lawsuit against the BA school. If you havent, you should! That was not a black or white issue but one of internal coruption. Internal corruption exist in many cities. Getting rid of the citizens does not change it. Those that do not want change are the "good ole boys". Hopefully someone will have the courage to attempt to change it. BA is already dealing with getting rid of people they feel are uncovering corruption. Don't you think it is time for a change in internal policy!

babyface ... get over it. BA isn't going to change an for those of us that have lived here for over 50 year, black an white don't want it too... except that it is growing too fast, if you don't like BA the way it is, go back wherever you came from an quit dredging up the black white issue.. its dead an over. No apology,

slimjim, I have said more than once Broken Arrow is a nice city with many nice people. I am not going to walk around with a blindfold on and support the "good old boy" philosophy of sweeping the bad issues under the rug! The wounds of racism will not heal until racism is irradiated at least with those in Power! Telling those who complain about it to go somewhere else is an excuse to continue with the hatred. When the Ledger did the story of BA's anniversary in the 90's they gave NO apology for the KKK's involvement with the formation of this city. They also did not indicate the KKK was no longer involved with Broken Arrow government. That may have been a lack of foresight by the journalist. Chicago had a very corrupt police force for decades and ignoring it, did not solve any problems! Schools should not pull black children over and demand to know if they belong to gangs. They should not allow students to continually harass a person due to their race, religion or disability. Principals cannot totally control what children say. They can inform children if something is not appropriate, and they can control what the teachers do. If the internal structure of the community leader is secretly racist, nothing much will be done help heal racism.

Babyface, if you are so unhappy with Broken Arrow, then why don't you just move. It seems from your slanted remarks about whites than you hold a grude against all whites. You state if you forget the cruelty of the past it will surely return. I suggest you let the past go, and move on. To keep opening old wounds only makes the healing process mnore difficult.

The N word may be used by some African Americans but most do not approve of it even in the music. Most average citizen has no control of the music being recorded. That should not excuse white student’s racial insensitivity. The fact that some BA citizens approve of calling black people racial slurs only indicates how racist some BA citizens are. They do not understand or probably care what that word means to people that were oppressed and tortured solely because they were Black not white! How man white people did Black’s lynch after calling them names for no reason other than they were white? NONE. How many white people were forced to eat in separate restaurants or sit at the back of buses or not allowed to vote because they were white? NONE. If you forget the cruelty of the past it will surely return. Last week one TV station showed a person in a hooded Robe bragging about how they were members of the terrorist group the KKK and was recruiting people. They can say they are not violent but their history does not support that. The fact that anyone is attempting to use music that as an excuse to support disrespect shows just how racist some people in Broken Arrow are. Dodge Ball is a game that the ball is not supposed to be thrown into a person’s face due to the fact it can cause injury. You better not call the principal or a cop in BA the N word or you will probably be suspended by the principal or beaten and tortured by the Officer with the Chief's and Prosecutors Approval, no matter what color you happen to be!

Iknow......... I agree, I saw the fox 23 crew at the school, ( I live close by ) and couldn't believe this story. Every day most of those kids walk past my house ( black an white ) without any problem until someone pulls the race card, seems to me that parents are the ones that keep bringing it up and the music promotes some really racial language. Dodgeball in the gym is common, we used to play when I was a kid an I got hit alot.. I just learned to dodge better, and that stick an stones rymme is so true.

iknow - 11/24/2009 10:56 AM
Wow, this is really getting out of hand. I happen to know for a fact that the boy who threw the dodge ball was not one of the boys who called the little girl the 'n' word. Those boys were punished, and should be watched to make sure they do not do it again. The boy playing dodge ball was doing just that, playing a game. The hit to the face was an accident and he apologized to her for doing it, but nobody has bothered to share that information. Hey grandma, did your granddaughter bother to tell you she chased the young man all around the gym and then punched him. Who is doing the assaulting here? The whole incident is on film and the administration acted appropriately. I am sorry this young lady has been exposed to such hateful behavior,it is wrong, but so is accusing an innocent young man, who was playing a game in gym, of something more vicious. He had nothing to do with the prior events and if this young lady says that he was, she is lying. The school has record of the boys who were punished for using the racial slurs, and the dodge ball boy was not one of them, so why are you saying he was. Shame on Fox23 for running out to that school and trying to stir up trouble without getting all the facts.

Jesus people, what a load of crap........heaven forbid somebody gets called that infamous N word. if black people don't want to be called the N word then stop calling each other the N word and condoning the use of that jargon in the rap music everybody and there dog hears coming down the damn road. There are white N words too,but we just call them white trash--you know the people who are f@#ckin lazy and won't get off there ass and get a job and live off of you and me through welfare. And lady, its dodgeball if she doesn't want to get hit she shouldn't play. Better hurry up and call the NAACP.
