(Monday, January 5, 2009 5:00 pm by Kaci Christian, FOX23.com, Tulsa OK) – The President-elect was in Washington, D.C. today, pushing for swift passage of his economic stimulus package. Barack Obama takes office two weeks from tomorrow, on January 20, 2009, and he wants no delays in launching the more than $700-billion stimulus plan. Topping Your Money tonight, FOX 23’s Kaci Christian is here now to break it down for us.

“40%—or about $300 billion will pay for tax cuts for the middle class, and for tax incentives for businesses to create jobs,” reports FOX 23’s Kaci Christian. “The remaining 60%—or about $450 billion of President-elect Obama’s proposal would go toward federal spending for infrastructure basics such as roads, bridges, education and healthcare—and it’s a portion of that money for which Tulsa is proactively preparing.”

Bill Cartwright is the general manager of Tulsa Transit, the public transportation authority. He says effective and adequate public transportation for the City of Tulsa is critical to stimulating the economy.

“Transit is very important to all major metropolitan areas, and in Tulsa, we historically have not had the level of public transit service that we need for a city of our size,” says Cartwright.

Cartwright explains that dollars from the federal stimulus package would help offset budget shortfalls and offset the City’s inability to fund the agency to the degree Cartwright feels would best serve the community.

“We are looking to replace 16 of our 1998 large transit buses,” adds Cartwright. “That’s about $5.5 million.”
