The City of Tulsa, in partnership with the Metropolitan Environmental Trust, will collect used cooking oil following the Thanksgiving holiday.

The event will be held Sunday, Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The M.e.t. Recycling Center, 3495 S. Sheridan Rd.
Participants in this event will receive a free Fat Trapper™, to collect meat drippings and small amounts of oils for trash disposal.

When cooking oils or greasy foods are disposed of in household drains or neighborhood storm drains, the fat, oil, and grease can clog sewer lines and cause damage in local rivers and streams. Officials say such problems can occur any time of the year, but are particularly prevalent around the holidays, when people put many leftover food scraps down the drain or incorrectly dispose of leftover fryer oil.

The City of Tulsa averages 45 grease-related sewer overflows a year. Eighty percent of all those overflows come from residential sources. The costs associated with grease-related problems are passed on to utility rate payers. Grease-clogged lines can also result in costly plumbing bills.

Prevent costly home plumbing bills as well as sewer utility rate increases by recycling used cooking oils and collecting, scraping, or wiping meat drippings and other greasy leftovers from your dishes into the trash, not down the drain.

Anyone who cannot bring their liquid cooking oils to the Nov. 25 event can drop the materials off at any of the M.e.t.’s recycling centers at any time of the year. Visit www.metrecycle.com to find the nearest recycling center.
