There were some tense moments tonight in an east Tulsa neighborhood as the city of Tulsa crews worked to repair water main break.
Things were going smooth until they struck a gas line and had to fix two problems in one spot. This happened near I-244 and 41st Street in Tulsa, Monday.
FOX23 was on scene with crews as they worked in teams to complete the repairs in a safe and efficient way.
We spoke with Tulsa's city crew and asked how the frigid temperatures affected the repair efforts.
Luckily, the job itself didn't take long but it was the icy conditions that slowed down crews, not the cold.
FOX23 spoke with Derrick Crawford, a city of Tulsa worker who said, "I've been doing this for 10 years so, I mean I've been through the last blizzards we had and everything. The cold -- it's just part of the job."
The cold may be part of the job, but it was the ice around this area that led to trouble.
"We had a co-worker that slipped out here this morning, and when I got out here this afternoon he was just barely limping around, so I told him he need to go get seen, so he left to go get seen," said Crawford.
This accident led to people taking more caution on the job.
"Oh yeah, we gotta take a little more time, watch our steps, so we don't slip and fall, I mean as you can tell this driveway we are standing on is iced over. Take the wrong step and you'll slide all the way down into that hole," said Crawford.
As far as the gas line and water break, that was handled with ease.
"We were here for maybe 20-30 minutes. Our hazmat crew (confirmed) what we found; ONG was very quick to get here, and the city crew did a great job shutting off their equipment and backing everybody out and we secured the area," said Tulsa Fire Department Captain David Rice.
A homeowner in the area told FOX23 his water has been out since yesterday and is hoping come tomorrow it's back on.
In talking to the homeowner we learned he was well prepared since he's seen this problem in the past with cold weather.
In preparation he filled all of his pots and pans along with his bathtub with water before it went out.
Now that is thinking ahead.
Stay with FOX23 and we'll keep you updated on the water main breaks around town and what to do if you're area is caught without water.
