After months of debate, the Tulsa City Council has made a decision about renaming Brady Street in Downtown Tulsa.

The council voted 7-1 Thursday night to change the street name from "Tate Brady" to "Mathew Brady" with an honorary name of "Reconciliation Way.”

Mathew Brady was a civil war photographer.
The compromise plan was suggested by Councilor Blake Ewing. Ewing said the change would retain the district's name without honoring the former namesake.

"I do believe the spirit of reconciliation must be addressed," said Mayor Dewey Bartlett, who opposed a name change to Brady Street. "I think that councilor Ewing, your amendment is appropriate."

Councilor Jack Henderson proposed a plan to change the name of Brady Street to Burlington Street. Henderson said Burlington Street was one of the names originally considered when the street was first built.

"The Brady name has never been a problem with the people who came to me. It was the racist information we heard about Tate Brady. So, to take that off and put someone else's name up there, it could be voodoo Brady, I don't care but it ain't Tate Brady," said Henderson.

Some Tulsans wanted to re-name the street because of Tate Brady's rumored ties to the KKK.

"When I come into downtown and I see Tom Brady, Tate Brady, any Brady, it hurts me," said James Johnson. "If I came and raped every one of your daughters would you make you daughter tattoo my name on her to remember me for the rest of her life. That's what you all are asking us to do."

Members of the Brady Arts District voiced opposition to re-naming the area, saying it can be a testament to how far Tulsa has come since the race riots.

0 Votes History shows that Tate Brady was AGAINST the clan. Henderson probably can't write a complete sentence. But plenty of negros are completing full paragraphs in prison. Way to go to show your freakin ignorance Jack

Jack is pretty much a racist pig. His quest to change Brady to Burlington was a racially charged attempt to turn a street into the namesake of the cradle of Negro emancipation in new York. Call it DLM avenue. It's the street Negros are racing down to incarceration nation ending their freedom, sometimes for life.

Give me a break Staycatron. All of this stuff happened, for the most part, over 200 years ago. Nobody today has done anything to the Indians or the Blacks. The white man didn't steal Indian land; they fought for it and the Indians fought just as hard. Throughout history there have been battles over land and there is always a winner and a loser. Our ancestors killed and raped a lot of white people too during the fight over the land. So let it go: the past is the past. Live for the present and the future. Try to make today and tomorrow a better place and dragging up every little difference between races is not going to do that. And to the African Americans: If you read your history books, it was your own ancestors that stole their people and sold them to the rich white people. Their actions were guided solely by greed, as are most actions even today. Look at the Martin case. How many parents whose son was just killed think to run to a lawyer and file a suit? Not many that I know. But Martin's parents wanted to spin the media before anybody else got a chance because they knew they could use the media to make money. Greed again. If we're truly going to be a consolidated diverse nation, then there has to be no more BLACK CAUCUS MONTHS, College funds strictly for Negro children, and no more "they stole our land" from us, the Indians. We have to forget the past (after all it can't be changed) and work together to build a better future. EVERY parent of every race has to go back to teaching their children common courtesy and respect. And we have to stop screaming to the media everytime some law or situation doesn't go our way. We have to take our lumps and move on. Learn from them and change for the better, and quit WHINING about the past.

The black man at the spearfront of this is the same man who organized the justice for trayvon rally in downtown. This is just more, of many, and many to come, demands from the black community. They are spoiled children with an imaginary plight against the white man. They will never stop crying racism, because every time they whine, they get a treat.
