Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor is considering mandatory furloughs for all city employees as part of her new budget proposal.  FOX23 investigative reporter Emily Sinovic has obtained emails Mayor Taylor sent to city employees and has confirmed both police and fire departments will be affected.

Emily confirmed with sources within the Tulsa Police Department and the Tulsa Fire Department that during negotiations at city hall, Mayor Kathy Taylor demanded those departments make mandatory cuts, that would only be possible through furloughs, part of their new contracts this year.

It was only after FOX23 pressed the Mayor’s office for information about possible furloughs, that Mayor Taylor sent emails  to city councilors and then to all city employees.  In the first she tells city councilors that FOX23’s investigation promped the emails.

  She wrote:

"[City of Tulsa] Communications just received a call from FOX23 asking if we were recommending furlough days for employees in the budget.  As I have discussed with each of you in our budget previews, this is one of the issues that we have been considering.  Because I believe it is important for employees to hear about issues that impact them directly from me not from the media, I will be issuing an email to employees on the issue..."

Emily also obtained the email Mayor Taylor sent just moments later to all city employees. Again, she said FOX23 prompted her to send the email.  She continued, writing the following:

City of Tulsa workers will take the furloughs if the city management will stop making full payments for services "not operational" such as streetlights & security lights leased from the electric utility company. Begin collections of traffic fines unpaid. Cease maintaining infrustructure like streetlighting of U.S. Interstate Highways belonging to the State of Oklahoma Department of Transportation in violation of Federal Highway Administration rules. All contractors shall have to follow all safety and statues followed by city employees.

Just because she is a millionaire, these poor police and firemen are way underpaid anyway and then to ask them to take a furlough....please. Has she given up her primo parking spot yet? Hope if she needs help from them that there are enough on duty to help her! We're talking about peoples lives and homes here. I'd think all the citizens of Tulsa would be outraged as I am. A concerned citizen.

How about starting the furloughs with the mayor and her staff. Let's just see if the dept. heads have the ability to run and manage their own departments without any " guidance " from the mayor's office. Maybe, just maybe, we would discover that her 4 days could be extended even longer and save even more money.

How can this woman say "public safety is our number one priority" with a straight face? Her main focus since she has been mayor has been "revitalizing downtown" and building dams along the Arkansas river. How did the city ever make it this long without the dams? She indicated on tv she's trying to cut 23 million from the budget, but she's getting 25 million from the stimulus/governor to go towards the dams. I'm sorry--her highest priority is WHERE?

I would rather have a day off without pay than the way Lafortune did it by cutting pay for anyone without a contract.
