Oklahoma-based Choc Beer Co.’s Signature Gratzer beer won a silver medal in the Indigenous Beer category at the 2012 Great American Beer Festival.
“We are honored to be recognized by the Great American Beer Festival for this limited edition beer,” said Zach Prichard, president of Choc Beer Company and great-grandson of Pietro “Pete” Piegari, the original brew master who created the first Choc beer in 1919. “This is one of many awards that our brewery has received over the past several years, and we are proud to be an Oklahoma brewery being recognized on a national scale.”
The Signature Gratzer has its origins in the Polish city of Grodzisk and is described as an effervescent, smoky beer. The Grätzer style eventually died out in Europe, but was reborn in Oklahoma with Choc’s Signature Gratzer. The beer is brewed using only authentic ingredients: oak-smoked wheat malt, Lubliner hops and an original yeast strain that Choc retrieved from Poland.
In 2000, the brewer’s signature Choc 1919 received a bronze medal, and in 2009, the Signature Series Dubbel won gold.
