A Cherokee County man accused of trying to hire someone to kill his wife's lover is now in custody.

The FBI, District 27 Drug Task Force, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Tahlequah Police Department investigated Jesus Cerda for several weeks.

"The suspect in this case solicited or approached a person requesting he murder another person on his behalf," said District 27 District Attorney Brian Kuester.

He told FOX23’s Dontaye Carter the Cherokee County woman's love affair could have turned deadly.

"Good solid law enforcement work today prevented a murder," he added.

Kuester says Cerda offered $5 to $10,000 for someone to kill his estranged wife's lover.

But that person went to authorities.

Investigators were able to do numerous other interviews, which helped the District Attorney's office get the arrest warrant.

"It's wrong,” said Kuester. “It's not only wrong to try to kill someone yourself but you can't hire someone to do your dirty work for you."

The FBI is also investigating the case which extends into Missouri. Authorities aren't releasing a connection yet but say they were glad to get they were able to stop Cerda’s plot.

Investigators confiscated two laptops that they are looking through to track down emails and anything else pertaining to the alleged offer to kill.

If Cerda is convicted, he faces five years to life in prison.
