Brothers attacked in a violent carjacking are still recovering Thursday night.
Police believe it could have started from road rage. The beating happened early Sunday morning outside of the
QuikTrip at 21st and Memorial.
While attackers were beating one man, his brother tried to intervene to help only to wind up in the hospital.
After jamming to Machine Gun Granny, bass player, Doug Gullick's brother headed to Quik Trip.
"A terrible ending to an awesome event,” said Joey Gullick.
As Joey drove south on Memorial, teens and young men in a dark blue Chevy Tahoe or a similar SUV tried to run him off the road.
"I tried to slow down, they slowed down," said Joey Gullick. "They were flipping me off and yelling out the car."
Joey said he pulled into the QT where he was meeting his brother and that’s when the trouble escalated.
"All of the sudden I see them racing through the parking lot. And I thought ‘Oh no I hope they go around,” said Joey Gullick.
However, the group of group jumped out.
“That's why I was in shock when they pulled out there are so many of them and they were coming after little old me,” said Joey Gullick. "There was more than five bailing out of the car."
He said they ambushed him in the parking lot.
"They had their fists doubled up and they were very aggressive,” said Joey Gullick. "I am sure I put up a good bout that's my nature."
However, they knocked him out.
“That's more than a confrontation that was a life or death situation right there," said Joey Gullick.
As they stomped on Joey, his brother pulled into the parking lot. He didn’t know who was being attacked until he saw his brother’s face.
"He's on the ground, rummaging through his pockets," said Doug Gullick.
He tried to intervene.
“‘Hey that's my brother, what are you doing, hey stop!” He said one of the attacker's said, ‘Oh you want some now?’ Gullick said, “No I don't want some. I would like you all to stop."
He said while his brother was out cold he fought off two or three guys.
"One just comes up and just slices me in the face,’" said Doug Gullick.
The knife was Joey’s box cutter he had in his pocket for work.
The attackers got away with Joey’s 2001 emerald green Kia Rio, wallet and cell phone. Doug said he was so out of it he went to the restroom and didn’t realize how bad he had been beaten and how much blood he had lost. QT employees called for help.
Doug blacked out and then Joey woke up.
Joey received a concussion. Doug spent the night in the hospital with 60 stitches in his cheek up into his lip. He has a black eye, punctured blood vessels, broken nose, broken orbital bones and lost peripheral vision in his left eye.
"You are going to get caught, so why have more blood shed?” said Doug Gullick.
Joey said because of this violent attack he wants to open carry.
“Too young to play those games anymore," said Joey Gullick.
Fans of Doug’s band Machine Gun Granny are also showing their support.
"When someone in the community is knocked down we all look to get together just show each other that support and love that musicians show each other,” said Sara Swinford.
Fans are holding a benefit concert to help with medical bills.
"It alls brings awareness with other bands," said Swinford.
Travel in packs and be aware, especially after a show when there's a bar crowd.
“If you see something that looks suspicious or if you get that bad feeling definitely go to the more lit areas of the parking lot even if it is a big parking lot,” said Swinford.
Meantime, Doug isn’t letting this attack stop him from doing what he loves. He has a few more weeks until their next show.
"Machine Gun Granny and we are not stopping," said Doug Gullick.
Officers are looking for Joey’s stolen 2001 emerald green Kia Rio with Oklahoma tag 954GEP.
He has a Mesa Boogie sticker on the rear windshield and a bumper sticker that says “It’s not too old, your music just sucks.”
The victims remember their attackers drover a dark blue Chevy Tahoe and a white or silver Tahoe or similar SUV's. Both had nice rims and one had etching on the back.
