BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - A Broken Arrow swim coach is accused of selling pot to a teen.
The district fired Cameron Killam on Sunday. Police said they arrested him at Central Park in Broken Arrow.
Neighbors told FOX23 they keep their children away from that area of Broken Arrow at night.
FOX23’s Andrew Carter talked to police and got details on just how much crime actually happens in that area.
Police arrested Killam in the heart of Broken Arrow, in a spot that is an easy target for officers.
“In this case what happened was an officer was proactively patrolling the area, because of the fact that he understands that is an area in the past we’ve had illegal activity,” said Cpl. Leon Calhoun with the Broken Arrow Police Department.
Calhoun said the area in question is in the heart of the city, “Well basically this area is at our Central Park, community center area. There’s a little small park behind the community center, there’s tennis courts and things like that in this one central area.”
The arrest was no shocker to neighbors.
In 2013 the Central Park area had 19 crimes reported:
- 4 drug and alcohol-related
- 9 larceny cases
- 3 assault and batteries
- 2 trespassing
- 1 robbery with a dangerous weapon
“Obviously the numbers are inflated because of the activity at the community center,” said Calhoun.
As for finding a swim coach allegedly selling drugs to a student?
Calhoun said that was more surprising, “It’s not as frequent statistically that you actually catch the adults dealing illegal substances to the minors.”
Broken Arrow Public Schools released a statement Sunday that there are no excuses for the alleged type of behavior from its employees.
