People who live and work in Broken Arrow told FOX23 it feels a lot less like just a suburb of Tulsa and a lot more like its own city.
They're excited about the recent growth and development, particularly of shops and restaurants, but Wes Smithwick, who runs the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce, said in order to be successful, a city needs more than just jobs in the retail sector.
"We have places for people to work here with good-paying jobs, primarily in the aerospace and energy sectors," said Smithwick.
Smithwick said Broken Arrow has been able to create its own microeconomy, thanks to quality jobs and growth. There are more than 100,000 residents in Broken Arrow.
Coldwell Banker Real Estate compiled the "Booming Suburbs" list based on low unemployment rates, easy access to grocery stores and banks, school quality and public safety.
Broken Arrow is the only Oklahoma suburb to make the top 20. Four of the top 10 suburbs are in Washington state.
