The Broken Arrow City Council met Tuesday night and quickly voted in favor of a cease and desist letter for the Red Clay Casino, under construction near 111th and 129th E. Ave. The letter would ask the Kialegee tribe to stop any further construction pending possible legal action.
Groups opposed to the casino plans attended the city meeting to voice their concerns, including Broken Arrow School Superintendent Jared Mendenhall.
Mendenhall sent a statement to Broken Arrow staff showing concern for the location of the casino in relation to a planned new elementary center.
"The district has already planned to build a new elementary in that area, and the location of the Kialegee's Red Clay Casino is not in the best interest of Broken Arrow students. Its position a mere half mile away from an elementary school is less than ideal."
It is now up to the tribe to comply with the cease and desist. Broken Arrow says further legal proceedings would continue.
