A Broken Arrow State Senator is proposing a bill he believes would protect the sanctity of the 2
nd Amendment.
Senator Nathan Dahm tells FOX23 this bill isn't about the state trying to overrule the federal government, instead it's about the state making sure the President and Congress don't ignore the Constitution.
“Most people agree with the second amendment, especially here in Oklahoma,” Dahm, a Republican from the 33
rd District, said.
That's why Dahm authored “The 2
nd Amendment Preservation Act.”
“Right now, Senate Bill 548 is very popular in the grassroots with the 2nd Amendment supporters,” he said.
If the bill goes into law, any changes that federal legislators make that would limit any Oklahoman's right to bear arms would be illegal. A federal employee caught trying to enforce any changes could be slapped with a felony.
“You can't have a law that's in violation of the Constitution. What my bill does, even though it's a state bill, it just reaffirms the 2nd amendment to make sure it is in line with the Constitution,” Senator Dahm explained.
Dahm, who only took office this year, is quickly becoming popular with gun activists. He spoke this weekend at “A Gun Appreciation Day” rally in Oklahoma City.
He calls his bill a call to action, not a call to arms.
“I actually started this before Sandy Hook happened, and before Obama issued his executive orders.”
To be clear, any federal law would limit the sale of certain assault-style rifles, but if you already own one, it wouldn't be taken away.
Senator Dahm's bill is scheduled for a first reading on February 4th.
