Once upon a time, I was taught NOT to hold a light in line with whatever you don't want shot. If there is a situation, the weapon-mounted light shows the bad guy exactly where to shoot. Dummies.

When the gun-mounted light is handier than the big maglight, the tendency is to use the gun light whenever they need a light, which means a lot of people are having guns pointed at them unjustifiably. That puts the citizens unnecessarily in danger of accidental discharges, and pointing a gun is also a big escalation in the use of force continuum. The policy is good and should be obeyed.

We definitely would not want the officers to have every advantage possible so they ensure their safety and the safety of others. Let be make sense of why this "no" policy exist; we entrust you to carry a gun but we don't trust you to completely responsible with it. So now instead of the officer being able to have a hand free if needed he has to use his off hand to carry a flashlight and hold up his firearm. Way to look out for their safety!
