Business owners in the Brady Arts District said they're against changing the name of their neighborhood.
One Tulsa group wanted to re-name the district because its namesake, Tate Brady, has unconfirmed ties to the Ku Klux Klan.
The Brady Arts District owners association wrote a letter to the city council saying rather than trying to revise history the name should be a reminder of how far the city has come since the 1921 race riots.

Proposed motion re: name change
As property owners in The Brady Arts District, we are proud of what our district has become and what it currently represents. It is the consensus of the Brady Arts District Owners Association that the name of the district should not be changed.
Rather than seeking to revise history, today's residents, visitors and merchants should regard the name as a demonstration of a new set of principles. It reminds us that what is today was not always so. Today, we welcome diversity and use it as a cornerstone for growth. Removing the name is to surrender to the past. Keeping it signals that we will not run from that past.
The Brady Arts District has grown dramatically away from the events of 1921 and, while much has been done, we recognize that all of the pain and hatred of the past is not gone and that much work remains. Today, our power comes from a new culture, our culture. We look forward to growing together, morally and economically. But to do so, we mustn't hide from the past. Better to be reminded of it and remain determined to create a better world.
The Brady Arts District property owners will continue to do our part to help heal the wounds of the past by dedicating ourselves to an environment of respect, dignity and togetherness.
In regard to the City Council motion to investigate a potential need to rename Brady Street, this initiative is not within the jurisdiction or legal parameters of the Brady Arts District Owners Association.
