After almost 4 hours of deliberating, the jury decided late Friday night to let Zane Atchison live.

FOX23 brought you the guilty verdict in the murder trial on Wednesday.

Atchison was convicted of killing 2 people at a Quik Trip in 2011. Now he will face life in prison without parole.

FOX23 was in the courtroom to hear the verdict and get reaction from both sides.
“I'm very upset,” Kristin Kosofsky said. “I don't think justice was served today at all."

Friday marked the two year anniversary of the night Kristin Kosofsky lost her sister.

She and her mom Mary, wanted Kaylyn's convicted killer, Zane Atchison to face the death penalty.

However, what was handed down was hard for them to hear.

"Her life was taken, another life was taken,” Mary Kosofsky said. “The jury did not get it right. Justice was not served in our opinion."

The jury sentenced Atchison to two life terms without the possibility of parole.

It was a sentence the defense was relieved to hear.

"We were just asking for sympathy and mercy,” public defender Gregg Graves said.

Even though Atchison will be in jail, his family still knows he is alive, and the Kosofsky's say that isn't fair.

"He gets to see his parents, he gets to see his family,” Kaylyn’s sister told FOX23. “My mom and I will never be able to do that."

Atchison's family understands the hatred. In fact, they sent their condolences to the victims' families.

The defense argued Atchison needs the ability to be forgiven for what he's done, and that couldn't happen through death.

"At some point and time, particularly in situations like this, the killing just has to stop,” Graves said.

So the Kosofsky's will cling to each other.

“We will just have to live with it and go on with our lives."

At least they know that Atchison can't hurt anyone else.
