They're out to prove they can make a difference, and the 61st Street and Peoria task force told FOX23 a block party is one step in doing that.
Tuesday, volunteers had one final meeting to put the finishing touches on the plan.
The area surrounding 61st Street and Peoria has an unpopular reputation, but Cheryl Davison told FOX23 that hasn't always been the case.
"When we first moved to Tulsa, 61st and Peoria was kind of the 'in' area to live," she said.
Unfortunately, she's seen it deteriorate, and that's why she got involved in the task force.
A force started to let people living in the area to know they aren't forgotten.
"We wanted to have some type of event that would show the neighborhood that we really care what happens to them," Davison said.
So, they thought of a the block party.
Volunteers hope at least 1,000 people will show up and fill Johnson Park on Saturday.
There will be live entertainment, free hot dogs, and a chance for neighbors to connect not only with each other, but also with others around the community.
"They can meet each other in a non-threatening, fun environment," volunteer Cathy McClanahan said. "We can have a police officer shake hands with a resident at 61st and Peoria."
McClanahan knows those gestures are important and need to happen if the south Tulsa neighborhood is to get back on track.
"There is hope, and there are things going on that can be positive for the residents out here."
Everyone is invited to Johnson Park near 61st Street and Riverside on Saturday.
The party is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Organizers are asking for support of this neighborhood function by donating a monetary gift or in-kind donations such as hot dogs, buns, chips, drinks, etc. The SPNCF tax ID number is 73—1433838. Since no goods or services will be provided in return for these contributions, donations will be 100 percent deductible. In addition to the food, there will be games and contests throughout the day for those attending. Volunteers are also needed to help serve the food, assist with the games and visit with the area residents.
Questions or if you would like to volunteer to help that day, contact Tracie Salerno at 918-691-2664 or Cheryl Davison at 918-605-6101.
