A legend in entertainment paid a visit to a Tulsa high school today.
Bill Cosby told Booker T. Washington students they shouldn’t be afraid to learn.
Many of us grew up watching the Huxtable family. Their lives often mimicked our own, but in many of the episodes, there was an underlying message. That message was about staying in school and getting an education. Wednesday morning, Dr. Bill Cosby’s message wasn’t just for students.
"What must I do as a parent to ensure that my children get an education and understand that they need credentials so to speak, so that they can earn a living,” he asked the parents.
Cosby dropped out of high school at age 19 and was still in the 11th grade at the time. He later went on to earn his Doctorate in Education.
"Let's get rid of some of these things that make us feel good, but we're not going anywhere,” Cosby told the crowd.
Tre Stephens is the student council president at Booker T.
He had the honor of introducing Cosby before hundreds of adoring fans.
"It inspired me more than anything and I think his love for education, and the fact that he is a successful African American male had a great impact on these students,” says Stephens.
At one point, Cosby was presented with two gifts by city councilor, Jack Henderson. One was a key to the city and the other was a lifetime membership to the Booker T. Washington Alumni Club.
Cosby ended his speech by telling the students, “I want you to go all the way. Stop this foolishness of being afraid to learn.” Afterwards, Cosby spoke to members of the Rotary Club of Tulsa.
