Sapulpa, OK- "I feel that God had his hand on that child," said Major Jeff Gilliland, Division Commander with the Sapulpa Police Department.
"I seen a little arm come out and I said 'Oh, my God,' said Jim Lakey, who's still in shock after finding a newborn baby in a dumpster behind the Disabled American Veterans building at 1400 S. Main.
"It was completely naked and it had it's cord on," said Lakey, who's a commander at the DAV and says he almost didn't show up at all to work Sunday.
"We had tossed around not going in and cleaning today and was going to wait until maybe Tuesday to do it," he said.
Lakey wonders- what if he hadn't been there.
"There aint much telling. I don't know if anybody would have ever found him."
Now, police say, it's all about finding the child's mother.
"The unknown right now, 'Is momma o.k.,' said Gilliland.
Lakey says he isn't mad at her- he just wants to know why.
"Why didn't they take it to a hospital, police station or take it where they knew somebody was home and ring the doorbell and run. But, a dumpster?
Oklahoma has been a safe haven state since 2001.
That allows a parent to leave a child up to 7-days-old with a medical services provider or child rescuer without fear of prosecution.
The baby was taken to St. Francis Hospital in good condition. It's described by police as a caucasian male.
