Employees at Educare, a North Tulsa Childcare Center, say one-year old Madilynn McDaniel took off her shoes and her feet were burned on the playground's soft surface as teachers helped move toddlers toward the door to go inside, but the toddler's mom says she was told something completely different.
You'd never know it by looking at her face, but little Madilynn has had a rough couple of days.
“I knew she was in bad pain, terrible pain,” her mother, Ashia Herron, told FOX23.
The toddler got these second degree burns on her feet at Educare daycare in North Tulsa. Her mom tells us it happened Friday morning in an outside area of the facility around 11:30, when the temperature was close to 100 degrees.
“Left in the heat, no shoes, and she just turned one,” Ashia said.
Initially, mom Ashia says a staffer told her this, “They said she was at daycare and she took her shoes off and one of the ladies left and came back maybe three to five minutes.”
She's been told at that point the staffer noticed the burns and called the family.
That’s not what Educare told FOX23.
“The story keeps changing,” Ashia said.
In an email, Educare tells fox 23 Madilynn was burned when she was walking to the door of the daycare with three other toddlers and two teachers. Mom's not buying it.
“I just feel that she was unattended, because as soon as somebody see's she's crying, as soon as her shoe was off, it seems like somebody should have picked her up and come to her rescue.”
Ashia says she'll never trust Educare again, “No, not at all. I hate to say it, because I really did like them, but after this (I can’t).”
Ashia has filed a report with Tulsa Police and the Department of Human Services about the incident here at Educare. We checked into the facilities record with DHS. The facility has one complaint about supervision from February, but the status of that complaint is “unsubstantiated.”
Right now, Madilynn is on medication to treat her burns and help her with the pain.
“They have her on loratabs. That's ridiculous that she has to be on loratabs because she's just a baby,” Ashia said.
She'll find out in a few months if there's any permanent damage.
“For that I have to go back to the doctor, they're going to make sure she has no nerve damage or anything like that.”
Ashia says Educare initially said they'd help pay for Madilynn's medical bills. When FOX23 News asked the daycare if they planned to help the family, they wouldn't answer.
