Tulsa investigators now believe neglect led to the deaths of two children in a south Tulsa apartment complex.

Miashah Moses, the aunt of the children, is in the Tulsa County Jail on a complaint of child neglect.

Police said Moses left food cooking on the stove on Monday afternoon at the London Square Apartments near 61st and Lewis streets.

They also said she left 18-month-old Nylah and 4-year-old Noni Moses alone.

The two kids died when the food caught fire, police said.

Moses is being held on more than $100,000 bond.

Investigators said her mistake was not only leaving the kids alone, but leaving chicken cooking on the stove.

Investigators were able to piece together surveillance video from the apartments to see Moses was away from the children for at least eight to 10 minutes.

During that time the food on the stove caught fire and it was minutes before she noticed.

Police said with help from neighbors, she did break in the door and try to rescue them, but they couldn't get to the kids' bedrooms because the flames were blocking their path.

"She could have taken action to control that before it got out of hand. Or, if unable to do so, could have taken action to protect the children and get them out. As it was, it was undiscovered until it was too late to rescue the children," said Cpl. Greg Smith with the TPD child crisis unit.

Police said the children's mother, Keahmiee Moses went to a hospital Tuesday for counseling and when her sister showed up, police were called because of a confrontation.

They said that's when officers arrested Miashah Moses on unrelated warrants and figured out her role in the children's death.

FOX23 found Miashah Moses spent time in jail at least three other times: for assault and battery, second degree burglary and petit larceny. She was arrested just last year for drugs.

Cpl Greg Smith with TPS’s child crisis unit said he sees the worst of the worst when it comes to crimes against kids.

He said that while Miashah Moses isn’t exactly a standup citizen but there was no reason her own sister might have worried about her watching her kids.

“Are not reasons you would suspect there would be any harm or danger to your children if she was watching them. So, I’m sure her sister knew about the circumstances and didn’t think there was any reason to suspect she’d be anything less than responsible,” said Smith.

Smith said while this was a terrible case, the truth is Moses’ crime wasn’t intentional harm of the children, just stupidity.

“You say common sense tells you, you don’t leave the kids alone, little kids alone with an ignition source where you could have a fire.”

If Miashah Moses is convicted of child neglect, she could go to prison for life.

The Dell City cop that deliberately shot an unarmed fleeing teen in the back was only charged with first-degree manslaughter, but a kitchen mishap is murder?
