Tulsa, OK- OHP troopers say they've found the driver responsible in the fatality hit and run of 74-year old cyclist Beverly Duffield, a resident of Tulsa who owned her own practice as a Clinical Psychologist.
Troopers say the driver, 28-year-old Roberto Salvador Alvelais-Torres, is a suspected illegal immigrant with no license. OHP has also recovered the suspect vehicle, at Sinclair Refinery Parking lot near SW Blvd and 31st. Co-workers of the suspect, who works for an insulation company, escorted him to troopers.
TPD and Oklahoma Highway Patrol said between 7 - 7:30 a.m, Duffield parked her car, unloaded her bike, and proceeded to ride alongside the frontage road, when a driver exited Hwy 244 southbound ramp connected to 17th street in West Tulsa, struck Duffield, and kept going. They both were traveling southbound.
Two employees of the Holly Refinery & Marketing company found the victim on the side of the road. She was still wearing a helmet, but was unresponsive. The workers called 911. Emergency crews pronounced Duffield dead at the scene.
Troopers say they recovered the newer model Chevy Suburban, with a broken headlight on the passenger's side this afternoon.
Officials tell us Torres is being questioned by immigration authorities. He is being held in the Tulsa County Jail.
Duffield's close friend, Carolyn Brittain, said the retired senior was a "superwoman" who enjoyed surfing, riding motorcycles, and cycling.
"She was in great shape, loved life and she was a free spirit," Brittain said. "You'd think she was going to be in Tour de France. There have been a number of lives changed today, the life of that driver is one of them, their life will never be the same."
