The scene for drivers along I-244 is not the same.  The iconic 9-story screen of the Admiral Twin Drive-In has burned to the ground.  Fox 23’s Douglas Clark has the story.

“We’ve been here since 1951.  The city seems to love this place.  We love being here.  It’s going to be difficult,” says co-owner Blake Smith.

It was not just a theater but a Tulsa icon – one of the last remaining souvenirs of a by-gone era.  Now, the Admiral Twin Drive-In may never be what it once was.

“I don’t know if we’ll ever be back.  We’d like to be back,” says Smith.

The Admiral Twin Drive-In was built in 1951 and became famous in the 1983 movie The Outsiders.

It is one of the last remaining drive-ins in the country.  Now, after years of showing comedies and dramas, the theater is dealing with real-life drama of its own.  Around 2 p.m., a person driving along 244 spotted the iconic theater on fire.  Flames were shooting hundreds of feet in the air.

“The fire was at the very top of the theater and it was burning straight down,” says witness Bill Anderson.  “Yeah, it’s a shame.”

Thirteen fire trucks rushed to the scene, but crews had to battle high winds and search for the nearest water supply.

“Because of the distance from the highway and access to fire hydrants, we had a hard time getting water to these units,” says Tulsa Fire Department spokesperson Bill French.

It was too late to save the beloved structure.  The owners weren’t able to get insurance on the screen, because it was so old.  Right now, they’re not sure if they can rebuild.

“It broke my heart.  It’s still breaking my heart.  It’s hard to look because that tower was such an icon of Tulsa,” says Smith.

There is now a Facebook campaign devoted to raising money so the theater can rebuild.  The owners have set up a fund for donations at the Security Bank at 51st & 169.

If you are wanting to help with any part of the Rebuilding of the Admiral Twins, the current need that they have is fixing the plumbing. They have no electricity out there nor plumbing due to the fire. There is a biker show and a car show scheduled and one of them is for this next weekend. They need the money from these shows but they have an immediate need of getting the plumbing fixed for these events. If you are a plumber and can volunteer your services, please contact the Admiral Twins or show up out there on location, and let them know that you will help. Thanks Tulsa, for everyone's efforts. Together WE WILL REBUILD!!

There is some fundraisers that have already been started to help them rebuild. We sold out of the shirts that they had available to sell in just an hour tonight. More hopefully are coming tomorrow. Tomorrow, starting at 8 a.m there will be a group of volunteers out at the Admiral Twins accepting donations to help in rebuilding. Please, Tulsa, come out and do what you can to help restore our historic landmark. The owners and the police will be out there tomorrow to help oversee things, just so that you know that it is legitimate. If for some reason you can't make it, you can also visit their Facebook page by typing in the search box Admiral Twin drive-in. There is an account set up to accept donations and all of the info for that is one there. The owner is also in need of some help with the removal of the old debris. If you have any equipment and can volunteer your time to help with the removal, they would be greatly appreciate it.

nooooo! Family has been going there for generations. It's the only theater we go to. The facebook page says Security Bank at 51st/169 is taking donations. Another company out of Owasso is selling t-shirts for $10 to help with the rebuild. If I can find their website I'm going to buy at least 4.

What a tragic event for Tulsa. Many fond memories from my childhood and now for me as a parent myself. It would be wonderful to see the Twins rebuilt. I would donate if they were.
