Joel Pina is now charged with conspiracy to commit first degree murder for the shooting death of a Tulsa couple last summer.
Patrick Shawn and Kaylyn Kosofsky were shot to death in the parking lot of a church near 71st and Riverside in what prosecutors allege was a murder for hire plot. Court records allege the accused killer, Zane Atchison, was paid by another man, Joel Pina, to murder Patrick Shawn.
Records show police talked to a witness that was associated with Patrick Shawn and spent time with Zane Atchison shortly before the shooting. The witness told police they knew Shawn owed $45,000 to Pina and saw Pina offer Atchison a couple of ‘stacks’ of money to ‘take out’ Patrick Shawn.
The witness said a stack of money was $10,000 and it was clear Pina meant for Atchison to kill Patrick Shawn. The witness told police they texted Shawn to meet at a Wal-Mart near 81st and Lewis on the day of the shooting at Atchison’s request, but was apprehended for shoplifting without knowing if Atchison and Shawn met up.
Atchison was arrested for the murders after a stolen motorcycle he was driving was recognized at the murder scene. He is charged with two counts of first degree murder. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
Another witness told police they witnessed Joel Pina and Zane Atchison beat Patrick Shawn shortly before his death and threaten his life over money owed to Pina.
Pina is also charged with two counts of first degree murder.
