The American Medical Association now classifies obesity as a disease.

The Los Angeles Times reported the group voted to approve that decision on Tuesday. The declaration recognized obesity as a medical condition that requires treatment and prevention.

The LA Times quotes an AMA member that said it will "help change the way the medical community tackles this complex issue."

Obesity affects about one in three adults and 17 percent of children in the US.
