Winter weather preparations in Broken Arrow include key players from the fire department, police, city crews and emergency management. FOX23 got an inside look at the Emergency Operation Center in Broken Arrow to see what crews do hours leading up to a storm.

Sergeant Ed Ferguson with BAPD Traffic Division told FOX23 that crews have kept an eye on the winter system since Sunday.

“We are putting all of the wheels in motion so that we will have an adequate response,” said Sgt. Ferguson, “We have been actively looking at reports and issuing advisories.”

Ferguson said that timing and planning is imperative when it comes to managing winter weather preparations. FOX23 was there as Ferguson drafted an advisory for command personnel, city directors, and fire and police crews based off of information from the National Weather Service.

“We do that to try to give them as much advance notice as possible, “said Ferguson.

Advisories from EOC can give warning about the need for more crews, salt, sand. The advisory can also serve as a reminder for emergency responders to fuel up the vehicles and dress appropriately for the elements.

Internal preparations at the police station and jail are also taken. Sgt. Ferguson said that they make sure that all of the generators are in working condition and that the pantries are stocked with food inside of the jail.

The city of Broken Arrow has 16 dump trucks equipped with snow plows. The city has stock piled 900 tons of salt and 1200 tons of sand.

Ferguson said that crews will pretreat some of the streets and bridges approximately two hours before road conditions freeze.
