Sometimes speeds top 40 miles per hour along a stretch of Pine near Union Avenue in west Tulsa.
Less than a quarter of a mile away sits Academy Central Elementary school, where parents clutch kids' hands tightly when crossing the road.
But plenty of kids have to chance it by themselves.
"All I could see was the ground," said Tyionna Whitaker, 12, who was crossing the road Wednesday morning on her way to school.
"No cars coming across," said Tyionna, groggy from medication and a visit to the hospital. The 12-year-old and three others headed to their bus stop at Academy Central, but before she could cross, someone hit her.
"I was trying to keep myself calm," said her mom, Ladonna. "Sheer shock, sheer terror."
Ladonna Whitaker says she's reached out to Tulsa Public Schools for answers for some time regarding traffic safety.
"I don't know what the heck is going on," said Ladonna.
Police say the driver slid on the slick road and wasn't ticketed. But plenty of kids cross the road every day. Along Pine, FOX23's Frank Wiley didn't find a crossing guard, crosswalk or students crossing sign. He didn't find one until he was almost on school property.
However, the city says a crosswalk is in the works, says Mark Brown with the City of Tulsa.
Parents just hope their kids are safe until that happens.
Tiyonna will have to wear a foot brace for awhile.
