Tulsa police said the woman accidentally shot in the head by her 3-year-old boy in east Tulsa died.
Police identified the mother as 26-year-old Christa Engles. Officers said it happened when she was home with her 1-year-old and 3-year-old near 161st East Avenue and Admiral around 5:30 p.m. Monday.
TPD believes she was changing her younger child’s diaper when the 3-year-old fired a shot with a semi-automatic handgun.
Vera Bennett lives in the same neighborhood and spoke with FOX23, "My heart just goes out to this family. We have to pray. We have to pray for peace."
Bennett described the scene in her east Tulsa neighborhood as chaotic.
She saw police cars, fire trucks and an ambulance.
“So I went down to see if there was anything I could do," Bennett told us.
That's when others told her the news.
"The grandmother came in and supposedly found the two children covered in blood," Bennett said.
Specialists who talked with the child confirmed the 3-year-old pulled the trigger.
"I just can’t imagine in today's society that there would be a gun a loaded gun where a toddler could get it," Bennett said.
Only one thing is certain in this case, everyone FOX23 talked to agreed this is a tragedy.
"Now there is a child, two children actually with no mother and a whole family that is traumatized and going through a lot of trauma right now," Bennett said.
Tulsa police told FOX23 Engles husband is a truck driver and was out of the state Monday night
