Band director finds inspiration from experience playing music, brings home Golden Apple

TULSA, Okla. - Penny Davis has been a band director for 34 years.

She teaches sixth, seventh and eighth grade band at Clinton Middle School

She says her experience playing clarinet and saxophone while she was growing up in Ponca City drove her to become a teacher.

“I wanted to share that experience with my students and anyone that I can,” she said.

Davis says it makes it all worthwhile to see her students grow.

“Band kids are great kids,” she said. “It doesn’t matter where you go, band kids are wonderful students, and so, I enjoy teaching them and watching them learn.”

Davis was nominated for a Golden Apple Award by a student’s grandmother. Rhonda Tabor wrote, “The students like and respect her. Therefore, they keep grades up and behavior under control. She happily provides car rides for students to events and goes above and beyond for any student.”

Congratulations to Penny Davis, this week’s Golden Apple Award winner.
