A two year-old is recovering after the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office says she was burned by chemicals used to make meth.

She is now in the custody of the Cherokee Nation’s Children, Youth and Family services.

It happened Friday on Jones Street in Tahlequah.  The toddler was burned on her left side from her underarm down to her waist. Deputies were notified by doctors at Tahlequah City Hospital who first saw the burns.

"It's tough, these kids are the youngest victims,” said Cherokee County Undersheriff Jason Chennault. “They can't fight for themselves."

Chennault told FOX23’s Dontaye Carter the child was in the care of her grandmother, 55-year-old Brenda Vann, at the time of the accident. She told deputies she didn’t know what happened to the child.

Investigators believe the child wasn’t taken to the hospital immediately. They believe up to 24 hours could’ve gone by before the injuries were reported.

Deputies got two search warrants Friday and found a home they say was unlivable. There were several animals in the house.

"The animals had defecated and urinated in the house and it hadn't been cleaned up the little girl was living there with all this stuff," said Chennault.

Deputies found meth lab in the home and chemicals to make it in a car nearby.  Chennault says there was no food in the fridge and adds there was so many chemicals that the child could’ve easily come in contact with it.

"Her (the grandmother’s) addiction to the meth beat out her care for the girl," Chennault told FOX23.

FOX23 has learned there could be even more charges and more arrest.

Vann faces charges of child endangerment and making meth. She is still in jail on a $75,000 bond.

Any word on where the mother was? Or what will happen to the child now?

Just another example of what drugs do. Baby girl may not remember what happened, but she'll have scars that will have to be explained. I pray that she is doing okay.
