Escaped inmates recaptured in Wagoner County

Two inmates are back behind bars after escaping from a Wagoner County jail.

Larry Cotton and Mickey Staggs were captured in Wagoner less than 24 hours after they disappeared, police said.

People in Wagoner are breathing a sigh of relief now that Cotton and Staggs are locked up at the Wagoner County Jail.

On Monday night the men overpowered their jailer and got out.

FOX23's cameras were rolling as Staggs was led into jail in handcuffs. Staggs was caught a short distance down the road from the Wagoner County Sheriff's Office.

Staggs was captured when he crawled right out in front of a U.S. marshal.

"I feel a lot safer especially knowing they were here in town and that they caught them and that they all worked together and it's turned out well," said Carolyn Henderson, who is grateful the men were caught.

Henderson said she was frightened knowing two criminals were running around Wagoner possibly armed.

"On my way to work today I was watching all sides of the road to see if I spotted anyone and yeah, (my) nerves were on edge," she said.

Deputies captured Cotton early Tuesday morning after a tip led them to the Autumn Wood apartments.

The sheriff told FOX23 he and his team will be re-evaluating their jail procedures.

"We're going to look at any problems and how this happened and if there are any changes we need to make," said Sheriff Bob Colbert.

Inmates at the jail were locked down after the two escaped late Monday night.

FOX23 has learned there are 109 inmates currently at the jail and they are already over capacity.

Well of course more money will fix everything, sheriff. But wont that also jack up the price of bribing a jailer?
